Jazz Under the Trees at Arco do Cego

By half past six, the low July light has turned Jardim do Arco do Cego the colour of warm stone. Plastic chairs fill in loose rows beneath the trees; a couple spreads a blanket on the grass near the Borges sculpture. No tickets, no wristbands, no queue—just a stage, a parish garden, and whatever the evening brings.

What the evening brings, this Friday 31 July, is Zé Cruz’s Trust Fall project, the second of five free concerts in the 2026 Avenidas Hot Jazz festival. Organised by the Junta de Freguesia de Avenidas Novas with artistic direction from Hot Clube de Portugal (Europe’s oldest jazz club, founded in 1948), the series has quietly grown from a handful of August Saturdays in 2023 into a full July-through-August run.

The expansion matters. Where earlier editions offered a handful of weekend afternoons, 2026 plants five Friday-evening sessions across both months, a shift from bonus programming to genuine summer fixture. The remaining dates—7, 21, and 28 August, all at 18:30—feature Ricardo Sousa Quinteto, Gonçalo Neto’s BOXEO project, and Guilherme Fradinho Quinteto. Entry is free, limited to the garden’s capacity.

The venue has its own past. Built on a former Carris tram terminal and inaugurated in 2005, the garden was renamed Jardim Jorge Luis Borges in 2009. It sits in the Bairro do Arco do Cego, one of Lisbon’s earliest social-housing developments, completed in 1935. Nearly a century on, the public purpose holds: free culture, open ground.

Concerts start at 18:30, when the light is still good and the chairs are still empty. That window closes fast.
